Plumbers use a chemical called vaporooters to get rid of roos of trees that have made their way into the draining pipes. Since roots look for moisture, they can crack draining pipes open in order to get water. Plumbers used to cut the tree roots as a solution but the roots would simply grow back into the pipe bigger and stronger.

Vaporooters destroys the roots in the drainage pipes without harming the vegetation on the ground. Vaporooters consist of dichlobenil which fixes itself on the cracks and joints of the pipe are restrained the roots from growing further. It also contains metam sodium which is absorbed by the roots and kills them on contact. There is only minimum damage to the pipes, otherwise it is a very effective method.

Plumbers also use hydrojetters to clean drains. The device is put inside the drainage pipe until it reaches the place of the blockage. Then the device release water under very high pressure which breaks down the blockage into small particles which can then flow down the drain. The dirt stuck to the insides of the pipe are removed by the nozzles on the sides.

Plumbers also use drain snakes. Drain snakes are made of coils made from flexible wires. Until the blockage is reached, the drain snake is lowered into the drain. The plumber then turns on a motor which turns the wires at the end of the drain snake which breaks down the blockage into small particles.
